Ranking is dead, Traffic is all that matters!

July 29th, 2009 | by Peter Cullen |

Stop all efforts to get good rankings.

It’s simply not worth it anymore. With the rapid approach of personalisation and geo targeted results it all about traffic. I’ve paraphrased a a bit, but this is the general argument from an article posted on WebProNews recently.

There must be something missing here. Traffic was always most important. Ranking will still be important, but you’ll need to take the personalisation and localisation into account. Headlines like this just confuse site owners that are trying to get their heads around what needs to be done to get more traffic – and the right traffic – to their sites. Sites won’t just magically get viewed by visitors.

I guess the trust of Bruce Clay’s argument is that measuring your SEO campaign on rankings alone may in the future lead to increasingly bitter disputes between website owners and SEO professionals. Although the original article is a bit dated (Nov 08), I think Bruce has an valid argument, albeit that the pace of his suggested change is a bit off.

I think website owners will really only ever measure your SEO campaign by conversions, – at least that’s what they should be focused on. We all know traffic for the sake of traffic is a dead end!

I think ranking is as important as getting traffic, coz Ranking will make your site more trustworthy for search engines hence resulting in getting more traffic..

    Hi Peter,

As is usual with WPN it is mostly heading and then fluff. They must have one of the largest mailing lists on the web and they really do try to milk it.

To a certain extent traffic dirversity does matter – but on the whole that nornmally goes hand in hand with ranking.

Fair point, WPN do tend to make good headlines.

We’ve made a lot of changes to the SEO Workbench, backend and front end – may be worth checking out again sometime.

We rank from number 1 to 4 in product development and product development services and have for a couple years. Google shows tens of thousands of searches yet we see no more than 30 hits a day and zero business!

I am completely agree with what Ramesh had said… The ranking is the major factor with which you can make your website and your business more trustworthy for your clients and also for the search engines… And what if you only getting nonsense traffic, without having the business from that traffic. If your website is ranking in top 3 or 5 then you’ll get the traffic along with the business.
