Post 2 of 5 – Keyword Use in Metatags and Domain Age:

This is part 2 of a series of posts for Website Owners wanting to implement organic SEO for their own website and drive more traffic.

Issue 3: Keyword Use in Meta Tags

When a search engine crawls a page on your website as well as indexing the text on the page it also indexes some html tags and assigns a weighting to these tags.  Some tags are more important than others and thus should be more closely looked at.

The first of these tags is the title tag.

Go to any browser, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and browse to any website. Now, at the top of the browser, click on View, Source (or Page Source, or View Source), this will show you the html for the web page you are viewing.

At or near the very top you’ll see the title html tag, it’ll be something like,  <title>Welcome to my company</title>.

The words that you put in between the title tags are very important and should be filled with your most important keywords.

Each page on your website should have unique title tags and they should be a specified length, about 60-65 characters (including spaces).

Two other meta tags worth mentioning are the description the keyword tag.

The description tag can also be found at or near the top of the page when you view the source. It will look something like, <meta name=”Description” content=”The description of my webpage here”>. You will get the most benefit from this tag if you have a unique description for every page and you keep the description to about 200-250 words. For each unique description, pick 4-5 keywords and work them into the description.

Due to spamming, the keyword tag has dropped a lot in its importance over the years. The keyword tag will look something like this, <meta name=”Keywords” content=”my keywords here”>. It is commonly believed that Google does not use this meta tag when assigning relevance. Its no harm though to put your keyword in the meta tags, again make them slightly different for each page and also this may be a good place to put in misspellings for keywords that are commonly misspelled.

Issue 4: Domain Age

The age of your domain age can have a big impact on your businesses ability to get a good ranking. This is especially true if you have a website that is new, and by new we mean less than one year old.

Why is this?

Why do new websites find it hard to get a good ranking? Well there are two main reasons:

  • When it comes to new websites the search engines treat them at first with suspicion and they put them in an index that is reserved for new websites. In the case of Google this is known as being put in the Sandbox. It can take months to get out of the sandbox and doing so essentially means that Google has released your website into its main index and now views your website as credible.
  • The second reason why new websites find it hard to get good rankings is that by their very nature they are new, they have no history on the web and more importantly they have no links from other websites. Getting links into your website and building your link popularity are essential to getting good rankings.

What can you do to get over this newbie penalty? Well, the most effective way is to start with a website that has already authority built in, i.e. buy an existing domain name.

These are being sold all the time and you can check out http://www.domaintools.com/ to see how much people are looking for when selling domains.

If you don’t want or can’t invest in an existing domain, then work on building your inbound links as fast as possible.

Addressing the keyword issues are far easier but do take some time and effort.

I like your tips for the self-promotion area. When I am writing a guest post, there are usually several key words that I want to link back to my site with. However, I limit them to only a few for the exact reasons that you listed. There are even some bloggers that will not publish your guest post if you include more than one link (your bio line).
