I agree with Paul. On-line marketers today are scraping the bottom of the option barrel. I get excited to see any kind of traffic pass through my site regardless of what they do when they're on the site. For some of us, our site stats is our very heart beating and when it stops so does ours. At least mine does and it's flatlined quite a few times and more often lately. What's next? Please don't say get a job. I've heard that lately as well and I just can't hear that nonsense again. I'm 28 years old. My job is on-line. Okay, so I say we vote. It's time to take a real call to action. We need to sacrifice some newbies to the internet gods. Or maybe to the gods treasury department. Something needs to happen. I'll look into it. :)

Bill, great tips! It's really all about expanding your reach and as you mentioned, RSS, social media and viral marketing make it so much easier to reach the people you're targeting quickly, not like the old days where it could take years, BTW your stats on that are pretty interesting.

Thanks for dropping by Paul. I think the likes of the Yellow pages can see the writing on the door and are planning to drastically evolve their business model.
It's happening here with the Yellow pages equivalent in Ireland, the golden pages. They are offering more and more web services and have now started offering online marketing services. The huge advantage they have naturally is that they have access to a huge consumer base. So now when the sales guy calls, he is not offering a listing in their directory, they are offering leads online!

Branding for local small business has never been as important is it is today. Local business has seen a real downturn in spending and the value of every new customer is greater than it ever has been before. Most local business owners can not come up for air long enough to worry about building a "brand."

I recently posted an article on eZineArticles.com titled "Stick a Fork in the Yellow Pages, They Are Done." The point being the media that worked in the past just is not working today.

The Internet, and those options mention in this post (RSS, Blogs, Press Releases, etc.) represent the only real option for developing a new, expanded customer base for most local businesses at anywhere near reasonable costs.

It is posts like this that help me show local businesses the necessity of improving their on-line presence; their Brand. I am definitely recommending that my clients check this out.

@Tess, thanks for the comment. Yes I think radio has it's place, depending on the product/service and the targeting. If for example you run an ad alongside a business show and your company offer business consulting services, then this could be a good match. The real difficulty with radio is measuring success.

I've never really thought of Google Reader or Google Alerts before. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

Tess

p.s. do you think radio is any good in todays 'rush rush' world?

Google reader should be a MUST for anyone trying to stay on top of their field. Yes, you have to set it up properly, however, I find it invaluable. The social media component, yes, it's part of the marketing program, however it should be towards the bottom of the list, not so much the top.
You can leverage the traffice from facebook and twitter to some degree but I'd rather use video (youtube) and tubemogl to really drive more traffic.

This strategy is very well thought out and presented very clearly. As I am rather new to this business, I am still learning and plan to continue learning. I will be referring back to this post and part 1 often, I'm sure. Thank you.

Great post, Bill. Trying to get through to customers the 'Building your website should only be the start' philosophy can be pretty tough. But I try to use some of theses points to express that to them... so thanks for backing me up. I agree with everything here.
