Doug I agree, I spend hours on my site perfecting every page according to the ‘rules’…. and then check other sites only to find they rank better with all the ‘no-no’s’ above.

This is becoming a time wasting game, I’m going to walk the streets with a billboard around my neck and see if I get better results !!

We do use a the keyword tag because even if Matt Cutts is completely accurate there are other search engines in the world that are capable of sending a multi million dollar lead to a website. *

We do use this Robots Attribute:

So our descriptions’ are used instead of the DMOZ or Yahoo! directory descriptions.

We use a robots.txt file for crawling instructions.

We do not use a language tag as we translate sites according to where we will market.

* I read all kinds of Google recommendations that say make sure you do this and make sure you don’t do that and then I see websites ranking #1 with all those do’s and don’ts completely backwards. Go figure!

Everything mentioned here is good advice for anyone looking to target landing pages to specific keywords, inline with the advice already given, if your site is suffering from duplicated content caused by bad linking or session variables the tag :

href should be set to the URL you want listed in the search results, thus can help the search engines focus on the correct version of your page.

I agree with this totally. In my experience, using the keyword meta tag just alerts your competition to the keywords you’re trying to optimise for… don’t give the game away!
