How to Get Started in SEO?

Are you concerned about the high cost of Pay Per Click advertising?![dreamstime_11218845[1] with border dreamstime_11218845[1] with border](http://www.interleado.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/dreamstime_112188451-with-border1-300x200.jpg)
If so you may have started to think about how to drive more organic search traffic.
You may have heard some comments about search engine optimisation or SEO as it is known for short…….
- “People selling SEO are like snake oil salesman”
- “I was promised a page 1 ranking but it hasn’t happened”
- “SEO is a black art and not a science”
- “You cannot control seo projects – how do you know what your seo service provider is actually doing?”
- “How long must I wait to see results?”
- Here is an interesting blog post from Lucio Ribeiro titled “The 8 scams peddled by seo consultants”
The sad thing about this is that the vast majority of seo experts and service providers are sincere, honest and very capable.
So why, you may ask, has this situation arisen?
Well much of it is down to poorly educated and misinformed customers. However another reason is the inability of customers to adequately screen and then manage the consultant.
Finally many agencies and consultants are more familiar with PPC and are slow to move into seo, given the poor reputation that it has picked up from the scam merchants.
Talking to web professionals, they will say they are being asked more and more about seo but are reluctant to get involved due to expense of training or hiring in experienced seo professionals.
and yet you know that if you could get good rankings through seo for certain keywords you could get lots of traffic on an ongoing basis and save tons of money on pay per click advertising costs.
How Can These Issues Be Addressed?
I can think of 3 options:
1. Invest in SEO Training for existing staff.
Some useful training resources include:
2. Look at SEO Software
There are a lot of free tools. However most of these are designed by techies for techies. If you are serious you are better off considering a paid tool.
Some software is available to download and others can be used as an online service. This means that you pay as you go and at any time you can stop the service and take it up again in the future. It’s like a utility that you turn on and off as you need it and you only pay when it is activated.
If you are not technically minded you should check out the SEO Workbench which is easy to use with a low learning curve and easy to interpret reports.
3. Carefully screen and select a reputable seo consultant.
Be sure to ask them the right questions (See this blog post paragraph 4 for a checklist of what to ask.
