How to Learn SEO?
January 6th, 2010 | by BillEgan |Are you thinking about the best way for you to learn seo or have you a broader need to learn internet marketing?
Should you attend a class, learn online or simply read a few books and study various seo learning resources?
A good question and the answer probably depends on whether you:

There are literally hundreds of choices for formal SEO training courses. Since the industry is unregulated it is very difficult to be certain of the quality of many of these.

This is great information and somehthing that can be used by everyday users and marketers. One very important thing that is missing is the fact that with out SEM(Search Engine Marketing) in place all the SEO in the world is at about half strength. You want to be listed in several places in order for the Google and Yahoo spiders to pick you up. Attempt to find a group that will place you on their site on a monthly basis, not a per click basis if the cost is acceptable. After all, your goal should be to show up in Google and Yahoo and Bing in their organic search listings for free rather than paying those giants for a per click or per impression listing. There are many sights that you can go to in order to check your website for things that are lacking. One such site is http://www.websitegrader.com this will give you a good idea of where your site stands and what you need to do in order to repair some of the negatives that you find.

I think these are all great ways to learn SEO but your best bet is to start a blog, website, or social network and try to get them to rank in Google. Pick up a book on SEO “SEO Bible” read popular blogs like Search Engine Land, and keep apprised of algorithm happenings with the Google Webmaster Blog.
The basics of SEO are easy to learn but advanced SEO can only be learned by doing. One person’s opinion.

This is a really thorough resource. Thanks Bill. I can’t help but notice that most of these things are based in America though. There needs to be a more recognised qualification available in the UK. Nothing beats experience and hands-on learning… not that I’m wanting the UK SEO market to become saturated, of course.

Some great links in this chain and really useful information. Recently we have been asked to go onsite and train marketing staff. You would be amazed how high the demand is for this and how few companies cater for it!

Nice resources, I too am based in the UK and would describe myself as being at a fairly advanced level in terms of SEO.
I am always interested in brushing up my knowledge or learning new skills, of course, but I don’t know whether these kind of courses would be worthwhile for me or whether they would be teaching me things I already know? Can you recommend any advanced SEO courses?
By Peter Cullen on May 24, 2010 | Reply
E-consultancy look like they have a good advanced course, but maybe you have specific requirements?

To address a later comment, I think SEOmoz is definitely an amazing resource, but for your local small business owner who probably won’t understand the super technical stuff, SEOmoz might not be the best option for them. Rand and his team do have some great tools though for sure!

This is a great way to learn SEO and you have provided insights about what to learn and how to do it. However, the true learning process starts after learning SEO, applying it to the full extent and take advantage of its capabilities especially for bloggers, business, marketers, etc.

Hey Bill, I’ve not taken a formal SEO class but there are some excellent resources that are free. One of my favorites is ‘SEO FastStart’ by Dan Thies. Have you read that?
For me, simply following basic SEO good practices has worked well, but I also pay attention to finding the best keywords and using them effectively, obtaining quality links and providing good content.
However for those that prefer more formal training you’ve provided some excellent options
