Is your Internet Marketing strategy following the SERPS?
January 6th, 2010 | by Peter Cullen |The definition of Internet Marketing is expanding all the time – are you keep up?
Do a search for Michael Jackson on Google.com – notice anything unusual?
How many data feeds can you count? That is, how many different sources of data is Google pulling into the SERP (Search Engine Results Page)?
I counted six!
- News Feeds
- Organic Search results
- Pay Per Click Ads
- Twitter Feed
- Video feed from YouTube
- Images
Check out the video to see all six in action and broken down;
In fact you could probably add a seventh feed to the list above – social media because I notice myspace and wikipedia are list amongst the organic results.
The point I’m getting at is, does your business stand a chance of appearing in all 6 of these feeds? Does you Internet Marketing strategy includes tasks for all 7 feeds? If you’re like most businesses I’d say you covering about 3 at most.
Getting the optimisation of your website right is only the start generating traffic, in fact I think the term SEO is probably nearing it’s twilight years as the term that more accurately describes what’s going on is WTO, Web Traffic Optimisation (another TLA!).
Can you optimise for social media? Yes, listen I know it’s an engagement tool above all else, but you can optimise those profiles, build backlinks and generate traffic through social media.
What’s your internet marketing strategy like?
Do you have a plan for all 7 feeds?
Are there any additional feeds I missed? Google Local Search for instance?

I think part of the problem is that there are so many definitions to internet marketing that people just don’t know what to believe anymore. I think if SEO was just called something different from the beginning it would be easier to explain and understand.

Hi Nick,
Absolutely, SEO has changed and is continuing to change so much. Delivering a pure SEO service is only part of the overall online marketing solution. As I said above, I don’t think the term ‘SEO’ is necessarily doing the industry any favours these days! thanks for the comment.

This is so true. Google is becoming so sophisticated in what content it presents to its searchers (which is really rather impressive). The unfortunate thing about it is that most companies don’t have the time to keep up with appearing in six feeds… and they don’t have the money (or don’t want) to pay professionals to take a job as big as this on. I agree though. SEO is important, but concentrating on SEO alone is just narrow minded.

Hi Bill
I think you can add product feeds as well from Google Products, which makes it 7 or 8 depending on your inclusion of social media.
thanks

1. News Feeds
2. Organic Search results
3. Pay Per Click Ads
4. Twitter Feed
5. Video feed from YouTube
6. Images
7. Product Feeds
8, Local Business listings (Google maps))

SERPs stands for Search Engine Results Page, it’s what you see after you type in a search query into a search engine.
