Website Audit-SEO Auditing Techniques

Not getting the SEO ranking you think your website deserves?

Here is a summary of the important areas involved in a website audit.

1. On page SEO

The Content SEO Score - Key Performance Indicators

Your website is scored against an increasing set of key performance indicators. Your content score is influenced by the text on your website as well as your website design and configuration.

Here are just a few of our many key performance indicators which our SEO Workbench will analyse. Our reports will provide you with a detailed analysis of why your website is not performing to the standard you might expect.

  • Domain name/age:

  • Many of your competitors may have been around a long time and have built a lot of authority in their websites giving them good SEO rankings. Although you can’t compete on domain age, (assuming you’re not going to buy an aged domain and pay through the nose for it!), you can complete on creativity. Developing great content, building personality and strategic content syndication have always being ways to differentiate your business.

  • Anchor text links:

  • Backlinks achieved naturally from high authority website’s with relevant link text can only consistently be achieved on merit. Gone are the days when you used to be able to buy your way to tons of quality backlinks. Google’s ever tougher stance on paying for links is making that particular SEO tactic more blackhat than whitehat – is it worth the risk? As I said it’s important that a good smattering of the anchor text from your backlinks contain keywords that you have targeted for your businesses key word strategy.

  • Body text:

  • A web page with a large Flash animations and graphics usually seen on corporate sites, are the best example of how to not optimize your site for Search Engines. Search engines have difficulty reading the text in a graphics. In most cases there is no need for using graphic buttons or image maps in the navigation links.

You should optimize your web pages by using keyword phrases, so the search engines will know what products or services that you are selling. It is good to start sentences with your keyword phrases. it’s important to write keyword-rich content that focuses on the ‘theme’ for that particular page, while avoiding spamming the engines with extraneous keywords.

  • TLD (Top Level Domain)

  • Having the country code in your TLD (top level domain) can be a factor in attaining a better SEO ranking. It may impact the search engine ranking of your site depending on the geographical location of the person who “Google’s” a query related to your website. If your competitors operate world wide, why not set up a cctld, (Country Code Top Level Domain). This could significantly enhance your SEO ranking for local search.

For brand protection and for your organic SEO strategy , buy all the names for your domains, i.e. mydomain.com, .co.uk, .net, .org, .com.au…etc but make sure you setup that permanent 301 redirect.

  • Keyword URL:

  • One way to help compete for very popular keyword searches is to put individual keywords in the URL’s of different website pages. Google gives this some attention and can have an impact on your SEO ranking for particular keywords. In this example our key word phrase is “Learn Internet Marketing”, e.g: http://www.interterleado.com/learn-internet-marketing.php

  • Meta tags:

  • Google now pays less attention to the Keyword meta tags for indexing purposes, but the Title and Description tags are still quite important. If you do manage to get a good rank for a web page, whatever you put in your description and title tags may be visible to the searcher and is probably what’s going to entice them to click on that URL in the first place.

  • Keywords in alt text:

  • You should put keywords in your alt text. When Google scans your webpage it takes alt text into account, which may give you chances further visibility in vertical search website, e,g, Google image searches or in Flickr.

It also helps with accessibility, blind or visually impaired users can understand what the images are about and help with their understanding of the web page when appropriate alt text is used.

2. Off Page SEO

Your off page SEO Audit involves analysing all external sources on the web that point back to your website.

The Popularity SEO Score

Search engines like Google and Yahoo rank websites according to many criteria. One of the main criteria used to rank websites is by how much authority they have. Authority is calcuated by how many links from different sources you have linking back to your website. The more links you have from high authorty websites with a high page rank, the better your chance of getting a good ranking and more traffic.
  • Page Rank:

  • Each page on your website carries a page rank consisting of a number between 1-10. The higher that number, the more authority a website will have in the SERPS's (Seach Engine Results Pages). By increasing the authority of certain webpages, you allow these web pages to rank higher in Google for particular key word searches.

  • Quality-not Quantity:

  • It's important to realise that only links from webpages that are both relevant to your webpage content and of substantiall page ranking(5+)will help improve the authority(popularity) of your website.
Having 500+ links from irrelevant directories and websites will be of little use to you. With our SEO Workbench you can check which webpages that are not only linking back to you, but that are linking back to your competitors.

  • Twitter allows you to syndicate content to all corners of the web. When you publilsh an intereting blog article or web page, there's no telling how many times that URL will be re-tweeted, allowing for maximum exposure to your target segments with the click of a mouse.

  • These are just the Giants of the social networking wolrd, there are many more out there. The trick is, to find which of these social media sites you think can help you access your target audience effectively.
Through carefully planned Content Syndication processes you can ensure that you can achieve maximum potential from all of these social media resources that are available.

5. Online Sales Strategy

  • Keyword strategy:

  • You need to pick your key words carefully. Some keywords are too competitve and webpages with content devoted to them will never achieve a first page organic ranking.
Each webpage should be based on no more then 2-3 key words. The SEO Workbench gives you a good indication of how your website content in competing against other content of the same nature.

Sometimes it's better to foucs on more "long tail" key phrases that have not as big a search volume as other keywords. This means, there will be less competition for that webpage in Google's SERPS when somebody searches for that phrase.

  • Landing page optimization:

  • Your landing pages should be well optimized for a specific target audience.Choosing the right place to put you call to action buttons and your "H" tags is vital when trying to get potential customers to convert.Your key words should be placed in your "call to action" buttons to allow for higher click through rates.

You should never just assume that once people come to your website that they are going to do what you want them to do. You have to put yourself in their shoes. Therefore your site navigation should coincide with your Sales strategy when implementing your website audit.
